Aurora Diagnostics’ Partner, Pinkus Dermatopathology Laboratory, Commemorates 70 Years
Oldest Free-standing Dermatopathology Lab Celebrates Continued Success in Skin Care
MONROE, Mich. – Pinkus Dermatopathology Laboratory, the oldest free-standing dermatopathology lab in the U.S., is celebrating its 70th year. It has compiled an impressive record of analyzing more than 2.5 million skin biopsies and discovering 13 unique skin diseases since the lab was founded by Dr. Hermann Pinkus in 1944.
“Pinkus Dermatopathology Laboratory runs an exemplary operation and we are proud of the organization’s rich history and continued success,” said Daniel D. Crowley, Chief Executive Officer of Aurora Diagnostics. “Pinkus Laboratory was an early pioneer in the then emerging subspecialty of skin-specific pathology, or dermatopathology, and it helped create the standard of care for labs in this highly specialized area of medicine.”
Pinkus Laboratory currently operates a 4,800 square-foot facility in Monroe, Michigan, and a secondary reading site in Garden City, Michigan.
In 2010, Pinkus Laboratory joined Aurora’s national network of diagnostic laboratories, which upholds the same commitment to providing unsurpassed local dermatopathology services. This partnership provides Pinkus Laboratory with additional resources and the support it needs to expand its capabilities and better serve its patients.
Pinkus Laboratory has a unique history. Dr. Pinkus was a Jewish refugee who left Germany for Detroit in 1934 – one of many during an exodus of Jewish dermatologists prior to World War II. After founding the lab, Dr. Pinkus met Dr. Amir Mehregan as a fellow training at Wayne State University in 1959. Amir’s talent caught Dr. Pinkus’ attention, and the two men worked closely throughout their careers as faculty members, textbook authors and eventually partners at Pinkus Laboratory.
Today, Dr. Amir Mehregan’s sons, Drs. David and Darius Mehregan, carry on the tradition of excellence started by their father and Dr. Pinkus. They took over operation of the lab in 1994 and expanded its offerings to better serve the needs of physicians in the community.
“The history of Pinkus Dermatopathology Laboratory means a great deal to us both personally and professionally,” said Dr. Darius Mehregan. “This legacy has inspired a deeper commitment to our field and those we serve. We hope that Pinkus Laboratory continues to operate for 70 more years and for many years beyond.”
The Mehregan’s work alongside three other dermatopathologists at Pinkus Laboratory – Drs. Viktor Goncharuk, Stephen Olsen and Liaqat Ali – helping referring physicians in the region serve more than 100,000 patients per year.
